Loska Surfboards Project

About a month ago I got a phone call from my friend Andrew Loska asking me to meet with him to talk about helping him do some branding and other tasks regarding his surfboard making business 'Loska Surfboards'. We talked and I took in some style cues from him and then thought about it for a while. The concept I came up with was simple: it involved geometric shapes and mixing that with 80's design and colors....

I started in Illustrator designing elements based on my theme.
..... and then I took the elements and started coming up with concepts. Illustrator is such an awesome tool for ideas for a lot of reasons. Speed and ease being one of them. I showed them to Andrew and his wife Vanessa at our meeting over Mexican food and they liked them so we moved ahead.

I asked Andrew to pick one design out of all the concepts I made (I had showed him about 15 designs altogether) and he picked this one.
So I used Illustrator further to help me in designing the stencil which I hand cut later.
Then I took some spray paint and did my tests
The day I began painting the board was the day Prince died as a result I decide to change mydesign and make all of the cubes purple in tribute to him...
There's a lot of masking involved in the process of spraypainting the stencils.
This is after the stencil has been sprayed and I am removing the masking. Very important to make sure the stencil is weighted enough and your paint dries properly.
The final product... the video documents the whole project from start to finish. This is the first in a long series of boards, I really like it a lot...
